4. Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire Of The Rift
As mentioned in the Tactics Ogre entry, one of the other popular turn based strategy games would feature higher, and it’s Final Fantasy with that dubious honour. Though the games have always been a little strange, the main series has always followed a fairly typical pattern; at least until the Lightning games went a little haywire.
The most recent main series game has gone for the classic ‘Final Fantasy Number’ approach again though, much to its credit. The spin off games though have been far less disciplined, as this one proves.
Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire Of The Rift is just too much word salad to tell us anything. Everything has its reason for being there, but together it’s just a mess.
The first game in the spin off, Final Fantasy Tactics, sets itself apart from the main series easily enough, focusing more on tactical combat than the various real time strategy or turn based combat of the regular series.
The sequel to that was Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced, shorn down from Advanced 2 to simply A2 when that got a sequel too.
The problem then is that they also added a subtitle, which did make it less generic, but also far too long.
