7. The Matrix Online

Released in 2005, The Matrix Online allowed players to take the role of a redpill and explore Mega City in an MMORPG environment.

On release, reviewers gushed at just how accurately the game portrayed the world devised in the famous film franchise, praising the complete lack of loading screens throughout, while also noting that eventually, the expansive world can begin to feel monotonous with a heavy emphasis on combat mechanics.

Despite this, enriched by player-generated content, MxO attracted a relatively small but loyal fanbase of players as they embarked on a continuation of the storyline from the classic movies.

Ultimately as the years went on the game suffered from lack of interest in a crowded market, and when Sony Online Entertainment finally made the decision to turn the lights out in 2009 there were fewer than 500 active players.
