6. Doom (2016) - Rip & Tear
Doom is a game that knows exactly what it's about, and is fiercely proud of that fact. It's the gaming equivalent of a blood-spattered fist punching a demon in the face with knuckledusters made from the teeth of your loved ones. When it was rebooted by Bethesda in 2016, it was launched with a brand new soundtrack to reflect this.
Mick Gordon, who composed and produced soundtracks for Prey and the Wolfenstein games released by Bethesda, returned to work with the company in order to do justice to the original theme.
While it would have been easy to remix the retro theme and give it a new sheen, Gordon produced an entire soundtrack that adds to the intensity of the Doom reboot, and Rip & Tear was at the forefront of that.
This heavy metal track brings the pace of the rebooted Doom straight into the player's ears. With screeching electric guitars and drums that sound like they're being beaten to death with a blood-soaked hammer, Rip & Tear reinforced the sheer physicality of the game by unleashing a ruthless assault on the player's ability to hear.
