10 Beautiful Video Game Songs

4. Dishonored - Drunken Whaler

This theme is simply haunting.

Dishonored was a fantastic stealth game complemented by its dark, steampunk environment with elements of the supernatural, and nothing complemented it quite as much as the trailer song, Drunken Whaler.

Taken from an old sea shanty, the lyrics are revamped with a darker tone, and a much slower tempo to match the depressing setting of the game, and the careful nature of the stealth in Dishonored.

Opening with a small girl singing the first verse, it bursts into a chorus of children's voices punctuated by the clanking and ticking sounds of industrial machinery, an obvious reference to the steampunk setting.

The darkness of the instruments contrasts sharply with the cheerful voices singing over it, and the lyrics being sung are suitably dark, referring to cutting the whaler's throat, shooting him, or feeding him to rats.

Aren't children wonderful?

The finale of the piece is as tense as the game itself, and with the small girl returning alone to hum the final notes to complete the melody, reviving the tension that player's felt in the game, and reminding them that even after the action is finished, there is something awaiting them just around the corner.

They don't let me write here anymore. I think they were put off by my handlebar moustache.
