2. Earthworm Jim

Goemon character
Cartoon Network

Earthworm Jim is a character who transcended games into other forms of media such as a Cartoon series in the 1990s. The first game which was released on the Sega Mastersystem/ Genesis back in 1994 starred our hero on a quest to save Princess What's-Her-Name and keep his super suit out of the hands of various antagonists.

A sequel was released only 2 years later and was met with much of the same fanfare as the original, however, his jump into the third dimension was met with less enthusiasm.

Earthworm Jim 3D was slated upon release by critics, most notably by Gamespot who said that the game's camera was on a "Kamikaze mission to destroy the game."

The original developer Interplay had announced back in 2008 that they were in development of an Earthworm Jim 4 but sadly nothing has come to pass since. The last we heard of Jim was that he was getting an exclusive title for the upcoming Intellivision Amico, but until that day comes we still have the port on the Sega Genesis Mini to tide us over.
