Now rebranded simply as ‘Gears’, Gears 5 is the fifth and most recent installment in the Gears Of War series, and features the first space-age apocalypse on this list.

Set on the planet of Sera, upon which human conflicts had already driven society to the brink multiple times, the game follows rebel Kait Diaz as she attempts to discover the source of the terrifying Locust Hoarde - who had previously attacked and wiped out much of the human population in times of global vulnerability.

While primarily a third-person shooter featuring both single and multiplayer modes, the story campaign also sees Kait and her allies explore the game world and complete side quests. The political elements of the narrative are particularly unique and, unfortunately, realistic - because of course, people are still just as busy fighting each other with an alien threat looming on the horizon.

Despite the genuine exploration of how humans are often the source of their own downfall, the game’s biggest selling point remains its excellent combat. No zombies were implemented in the making of this game, but Gears 5 still recognises the gamer’s innate need to spend some time blasting your way through some type of hoarde - with a little variety.
