4. Meeting The Berserker (Gears Of War)

Okay, so this is sort of a boss battle. While the fight against General RAAM is a straight-up, pistols-at-dawn showdown, your first meeting with a deadly Berserker is anything but. Making the most of Gears of War's tone of being on the run, the encounter with the blind, but nightmarish Berserker is a stealthy task, where you attempt to lure the beast outside with sound alone.

The cinematic before you meet the Berserker is a particularly memorable one - frightened at the sound of the beast, a rookie soldier takes off, only to be viciously murdered off screen by the monster, with only the shadows showing just what happened. It's a perfect way to tell the player that confrontation is impossible. Outsmarting the beast is the only way to win here. It's a scary, breathtaking segment of the game as the Berserker bears down on you at all times.

Finally, you lead the monster outside and are allowed to use the almighty Hammer of Dawn on it. It's a hugely satisfying moment as you summon a colossal laser down from the skies to fry the Berserker where it stands. Sure, more Berserkers show up twice more after this initial encounter, but it's the first one that you'll always remember.
