One of the most exhilarating aspects of The Lord Of The Rings is its battles. From their immense size to the astronomical stakes they hold, it was epic clashes like Helm's Deep or the Siege of Minas Tirith that exemplified the sheer scale of Tolkien's world.

Middle-earth is therefore the perfect setting for an RTS game, and EA Los Angeles delivered just that with 2004's The Battle For Middle-Earth. Allowing players to take control of either the forces of Gondor or Mordor, the game put their strategic skills to the test with in-depth systems and challenging gameplay.

As acclaimed as this PC game was, its sequel was even better.

Released in 2006, Battle For Middle-Earth II once again featured two campaigns. One followed Glorfindel as he defends the lands from Sauron's armies while the other saw The Mouth Of Sauron and the Nazgûls assault locations such as Rivendell and The Shire. With more factions and game modes alongside the introduction of multiplayer and naval warfare, the sequel was a vast improvement from its predecessor.

Unfortunately, neither of these stellar games is available to buy today after EA lost the license to the franchise in 2008, with the online servers closing in 2010.
