With its epic scale, rich history, and endless potential for adventures, Middle-earth is the ideal setting for an MMORPG. Although earlier attempts were made, it would take until 2007 for players to finally be able to explore Middle-earth with friends when The Lord Of The Rings Online arrived on the scene.

Originally released with the subtitle Shadows Of Angmar under developers Turbine, this game sets players loose upon a wonderfully realised version of the fantasy world during the War Of The Ring. After players create their own adventurer, they'll be able to stroll through Hobbiton, explore Rivendell, and battle enemies in Gorgoroth, all while taking on quests that run parallel to Tolkien's books.

LOTR Online has continued to flourish since release. Alongside becoming free-to-play in 2010, several expansions and updates have been released, taking players to Moria, Isenguard, and Minas Morgul. There's no sign of the game slowing down either, with the Kingdom Of Harad expansion scheduled for release in December 2025.

Over 15 years later, this title is still going strong, boasting a huge boost in players in 2022. With Amazon's own LOTR MMORPG reportedly cancelled, LOTR Online remains the best place for players to create their own Middle-earth adventures.
