10 Best Next-Gen Reveals In Gaming History

2. Donkey Kong Country Reminds Everyone That The Future Is Now

Donkey Kong Country could not have come out a better time for the SNES. Even though Sega's 32X and CD attachments were failing, as well as Panasonic's 3DO and the Atari Jaguar, they at least managed to create the idea in consumers heads that SNES was outdated, that it was aging. Couple all that with the looming threats of the Sega Saturn and the Sony Playstation, along with the Nintnendo 64 getting delayed yet again, and suddenly Nintendo needed to get the very most out of their console.

In comes Rare with a game that had a level of technical fidelity that no other system on the market could match. It didn't matter the 32X and the 3DO were more powerful, or that the Atari Jaguar was 64-bit. No game on the market looked as good, or as high-tech as Donkey Kong Country with its 3D looking environments and enemies.

Donkey Kong Country would end up becoming a series all its own, spawning two popular sequels with amazing soundtracks that even expanded upon the graphics of the original. While all the new hardware was still slated to come out soon, gamers already had a taste of the next generation on a cartridge in their Super Nintendo.
