3. Octopath Traveler
It’s always great to see completely new IPs doing so well. And when you look at the three console giants, Nintendo seems the most reluctant to back new properties when their existing ones still sell so well. On this list there’s Labo (which is more of a concept than a true new IP) and Octopath Traveler. That’s it.
But if you’re only going to have one true new IP in a year, having one as good as Octopath Traveler is certainly the way to do it.
Octopath Traveler is a turn based RPG made by Square Enix, so it’s not like it’s an entirely new idea for Nintendo. But the characters are engaging, the story is absorbing and the art style is simply gorgeous. With 8 playable characters, there’s enough variety to keep you hooked too.
Although it has to settle for bronze here, this is the game the Switch really needed this year.
