Detention is a horror experience that's dripping in atmosphere and tension, with an incredibly artistic style. Still, it's the game's context and narrative that makes it such a powerful and profound experience. It delivers a metaphorical examination of a dark historical period, all while scaring you silly.

The game is set in 1960s Taiwan, during the "White Terror" - a period of martial law and suppression of political dissidents that lasted 38 years. It was a truly traumatising and dark time for Taiwan.

You are put into the shoes of Wei and Ray, two students at Greenwood High School, who find that the setting has become haunted by evil creatures known as "The Lingered". You fight to survive these spirits while uncovering the dark past of the school.

Of course, the historical context behind this title gives it an emotional edge, as the real-life horror is brought to life with suggestive images and references to Taiwanese folklore. The narrative, combined with the 2D side-scrolling, makes the player feel like an inevitable victim, merely surviving until they can no longer escape the situation's trauma and tragedy.

Even without the context, this game is still a terrifying thanks to the frightening monsters, eerie atmosphere and twisted visuals.
