10 Best Nintendo Switch Horror Games
1. Darkwood
Darkwood is such a unique gaming experience, as it appeals to a tonne of traditional horror set-ups but approaches them in an entirely new way. Instead of keeping you on edge with the constant threat of jump-scares, it freaks you out by building a consistent sense of dread and allowing the atmosphere to make the nightmarish setting seem real.
The title takes place in a mysterious forest somewhere in the Soviet Bloc. The residents of this terrifying environment have been trapped for an undisclosed amount of time and are tortured by ravenous monsters during the night. It's your job to navigate this world and try to find a way to live whilst fortifying your base to protect you from night-time terrors.
As cliched as it is to say, the environment is almost a character in itself. The forest feels like a living being that has captured you and the other NPCs, making any attempts to escape feel hopeless.
Additionally, the top-down perspective is an incredibly unique way to approach horror. Although you feel a little removed from the situation, the scares are so well seeded, and the atmosphere is so tense that you'll always be wondering whether you can even keep playing on out of fear.
Still, you definitely will, as the gruelling gameplay and compelling narrative will get you hooked.
