10 Best Open-World Games Of The 2010s (That AREN'T GTA)
3. Assassin's Creed: Black Flag
The pirate era is an alarmingly untouched area of gaming, so it makes sense that the best rendition of that era comes from the highly popular Assassin's Creed saga.
Edward Kenway's adventures across the Caribbean was a fantastic addition to the Creed series and the large empty void where pirate games sit, and it's still fun to pioneer the Jackdaw around in search for plunder and booty.
Where modern Creed titles are focused on RPG mechanics and mostly dropping the "assassin" from the gameplay, Black Flag was the first game to feature a wildcard in the protagonist chair, Kenway being more focused on pillaging other ships and searching for treasure than he was the Assassin/Templar War. Gradually he comes round, but having a character lead a sort of double existence as a pirate and assassin hell bent on stopping the taking over of the world was a fun twist.
The series has progressed, but Assassin's Creed 4 remains one of the best instalments in the series and a worthy contender in the ever-expanding sandbox world.
