4. Marvel's Midnight Suns

Marvel's The Avengers may have been a disaster, but there were high hopes for Marvel's Midnight Suns, since the promotions indicated the tactical RPG would put a darker spin on the normally light-hearted property.

But the moment Midnight Suns was revealed to be a deck-building game, the pre-emptive hype shrivelled away. Coupled with an “imperfect release window” and a poor launch on PC, it was no surprise when this superhero title became a commercial flop.

Midnight Suns may not have turned out the way it was initially advertised but it's still solid. Even though deck-based titles can be slow, Midnight Suns’ combat is vibrant, thanks to the dynamic and distinctive card system. Saying the wrong thing to your squad or misusing a card can affect each superheroes’ ability to fight competently. The fact you have to constantly monitor your teammates to work as a cohesive unit makes every encounter feel personal.

Midnight Suns is entrenched in Marvel lore, but still manages to craft a unique story that hasn’t been done to death, which should satisfy long-term comic fans.

And with the diverse customisation options, superb voice-acting, and sharp banter, what’s not to love?
