The fact you saw a picture of Sans and read those nonsensical "duhs" to the tune of Megalovania is a clear signal of the power this character holds.
Sans truly is the face of Undertale and was even the face of meme culture for a time. He's a little skeleton with a big personality, as his penchant for bad puns, sarcasm, and his laid-back attitude make him instantly loveable.
However, part of what makes him so fascinating is that he also has a powerful side that counteracts his casual and lazy personality.
Sans is a character who can manipulate the game, and is even aware of the timeline resets. This comes to a head in his epic Genocide Run boss battle, where his knowledge of the game and powerful attacks generate one of the most intense challenges in any RPG.
That combination of mysterious power and likeable comedy is what makes him so damn popular. Even so, no-one could have seen his massive influence coming. Kudos to you, Toby Fox!
