Copy and Paste what was said about Marvel's Spider-Man, replace web swinging with gliding and you basically have an entry about why the Gotham City that appeared in the various titles of the Batman Arkham series is one of the most iconic in gaming.

An open world game as Batman was at one point a fever dream for gamers. Arkham Asylum, while based on an Island and around only a handful of building was a huge success due to its detailed design and hidden secrets found by exploration. It also gave fans a tease of what could be achieved on a larger scale and that was exactly what Rocksteady did with the follow up games in the Arkham series as it was expanded to the city of Gotham.

Playing as the Caped Crusader himself, the player was able to explore different areas of Gotham over the later 3 titles in the series, all of which encapsulated the darker tone of the DC comics perfectly in their art styles. Gliding silently from roof top to roof top preying on unsuspecting bad guys was a great deal of fun and exploring every corner of the cities in detective mode to find all the secrets while grindy was for the most part an enjoyable and rewarding feature. Then in the final title of the series the Bat mobile was introduced as another method of exploring the city and while it was perhaps over used in the story line the free roaming feature was still every comic nerds dream.

While the series did descend somewhat into memes with the later titles, what with Batman having a moral code of not killing people but having no problem running them over with the bat mobile or breaking all of their bones in a fight and leaving them lying in the snow with internal bleeding, the games must be considered a big reason why superhero titles regained popularity and the setting of Gotham city is a big reason for that.
