10 Best Video Game Sequels That NEVER Happened
5. Fallout 3: Van Buren
It may come as a surprise to learn that, technically, the Fallout 3 we got to experience is in actual fact technically Fallout 4, if you count the cancelled Van Buren title.
Intended to be the third instalment of the Fallout series, Van Buren was developed by Black Isle Studios, who intended to allow players to decide their game experience; either a turn-based game like Fallout 1 and 2, or real time like the series would go on to be.
The game would start with your character waking up in a prison - either from a legitimate crime or an unfair incarceration, depending on your choice - only to manage to escape. The plot would go on to cover you finding out why exactly you were imprisoned in a place you can't remember, and why the prison was then the subject of an attack that allowed you to escape.
However, due to unforeseen financial issues, the project would be canned, and when Fallout 3 was put into development, it would be under Bethesda, not Black Isle.
