3. Final Fantasy: Fortress

Fallout 3 Van Buren
Grin

Final Fantasy: Fortress was an undeniably ambitious game. It was intended to be set years after the events of Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings, bringing the cast back to see them face off against a Viking-like invading force.

While Fortress initially was set out to be an independent IP, Square Enix were impressed with developer Grin's prior work on Bionic Commander, leading them to request that this pending title be made into a Final Fantasy instalment.

Square Enix were supposed to pay Grin studios a sum of 16.5 million dollars for the entire creation of Fortress. However, despite working on the game for several months, Square Enix did not pay up. Indeed, Grin co-founder Bo Andersson believed that the company had turned on the idea of Fortress after Bionic Commander received negative press on release.

If the story about Grin sending pictures of Final Fantasy XII when Square Enix asked to see the game - only for them to be told that these pictures "didn't look like a Final Fantasy game" - this line of thought goes very much appear to be true.

Grin would go bankrupt because of this debacle, and were summarily never paid by the company that had commissioned them.
