10 Best Video Game Side Characters Who Made Everything Better
5. Charles Smith - Red Dead Redemption 2
Red Dead Redemption's superb story features many a compelling character, but one of the best was Charles Smith, also known as the lone wolf. He's a shrewd navigator and organiser; at one point he distracts the Pinkertons after a failed bank heist to allow Arthur and the others to slip away.
A more subdued member of the Van Der Linde, but Charles also has a fierce conviction for the things he cares about. This shows through a damaging side-story in which he takes Arthur out to hunt buffalo.
The two stumble across several poachers who are slaughtering entire herds for profit. This greatly disturbs Charles, his past heritage coming to light in a poignant manner.
What makes the character so engaging is how he conducts himself with a calm confidence, while also maintaining a fierce loyalty to those close to him. Unlike those loyal to Dutch, he too understands the Van Der Linde gang's days are numbered and takes steps to cover his exits for the eventual fall.
Upon reaching the game's epilogue, many were very happy to see that Charles survived the gang's destruction. After helping him out of a brawling tournament, John Marston teams up with both Charles and Sadie to get their revenge on the traitorous Micah.
