The 2016 version of Doom, and its follow up Doom Eternal, build greatly on the mythos of the Doom Slayer, aside from 'guy in green armour who shoots demons.' The games present a joint narrative on the origin and motivations of our hero, including creating a legendary weapon for him that befits his backstory.

Crucibles are melee weapons that appear in different forms, capable of being charged with energy and used to one-shot almost any enemy in the game. The first appeared as part of the storyline in Doom 2016, appearing to be organic in nature, made from demonic flesh and bone. One of the weapons plays a pivotal role in the end of the Doom storyline but isn't used in gameplay.

In Doom Eternal, the player gets to actually use a Crucible in the form of a massive bladed sword that burns through even the largest and toughest demons. The weapon uses charges and is much more manufactured looking than in Doom, appearing made of normal metal, albeit covered in runes.

It also functions as somewhat of a 'key', being able to lock items into place when the blade is rammed into something (including Titans) and the hilt broken off.

Getting to use such a melee weapon, one that gives more life and backstory to both the game and the Doom Slayer, changes the dynamics and breathes new life into Eternal's endgame.
