To long-time fans of the Metal Gear Solid series, David Hayter IS the voice of Solid Snake. His gruff tone and superb delivery - that is often equal parts brilliant and hilarious at the same time - has become as much a defining trait of the Solid Snake character as the adventures that he has been a part of.

Thus, when Konami started showing off various trailers for Metal Gear Solid V, it was simply taken as a given that Hayter would be reprising his role in both Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain. Then E3 2013 rolled around.

In a pre-recorded video, Hideo Kojima announced that he wanted Snake's voice to go in a different and subtler direction than before. In short, David Hayter was out and Hollywood star Kiefer Sutherland was in.

The reaction was one of disbelief amongst much of the fanbase, with many simply not believing the announcement and instead thinking that this was just another ruse perpetrated by a man who is very much known for them.

However, confirmation from Hayter himself that he was no longer involved blasted that theory out of the water and Sutherland's Snake debuted in Ground Zeroes as promised.
