10 Biggest Video Game Controversies Of 2014

2. Censorship In South Park: The Stick Of Truth

It's an age-old mindset that exemplifies how much you can make somebody want something - just simply tell them they can't in the first place. Whilst that's not always applicable to every instance, when it comes to Obsidian's long-awaited South Park RPG The Stick of Truth, players throughout Europe and Australia were very annoyed by the fact that their copies of the game were censored in certain areas, whereas the American version shipped as intended. Sure the scenes people were 'fighting for' were nothing more than gory depictions of anal probing and abortion, but it's more about the principality of another party deciding what a mass group of people should be 'allowed' to see or interact with. We had the same problem back in 2005 with The Punisher, as its interactive torture scenes were deemed far worse than something like Manhunt - who let you suffocate a dude with a plastic bag sure, but it was an animation, not something you controlled with the analogue sticks, which was far worse apparently. These are the big differentiations the industry has had to go through over the years - it makes you realise just how farcical a lot of this stuff is. In South Park's case writers Matt Stone and Trey Parker ended up writing some pretty hilarious blurbs that would surmise the events you weren't allowed to see, popping up on the Australian version to the accompanying picture of a crying koala at the exact moment where the game would go 'too far'. Included in these 'censored' versions of the game was still a boss fight against a giant Nazi, "Heil Hitler"-spouting foetus too... prompting the question as to what discussion was had on its inclusion in comparison to what was censored. That's definitely a conversation we'd love to hear.
