Sadly apart from the lack of games for the majority of it, 2014 is most likely going to be remembered for the year when feminist Anita Sarkeesian was threatened with being responsible for a mass school shooting if she opened her mouth, along with female game industry workers having their personal details shared online, and the systematic breakdown of one Zoe Quinn's private life. Now we've done quite a bit of GamerGate coverage since everything kicked off, and there's definitely a thin veil of right-meaning individuals amongst all the disgusting stuff that floats to the surface. But like the Occupy Wall Street movement, many can get behind a nebulous call for 'change' - it's when it comes to actually developing a strategy with clear goals that the entire thing falls apart. The real problem 'GamerGaters' face in all this is your average person on the street doesn't understand what the cause is for, not to mention scratching at the surface reveals two entirely separate arguments - one about ethics in journalism needing to be clearer, and the other about the portrayal of women in games themselves. The two are only tangentially related in regards to industry females being targeted by vile abuse-throwing keyboard lunatics, but the comparisons stop there. It's a confusing debate to wrap your head around from the outside, but with everyone from Giant Bomb to Polygon weighing in (the latter changing their review structure to show more transparency in their business practice) both sides of the GG blade continue to be pulled apart. Which of these rattled your cage the most, or are there any total ground-shakers we missed? Let us know in the comments!
