5. Mister Mosquito (2002, Playstation 2)

The thing I find hardest to understand about this particular title is not the fact that you take on the role of a disease carrying bug but that a game like this was even considered for the PS2 as recently as a decade ago. The game was first released in Japan in 2001 (surprise surprise) and was an instant hit (allegedly). In case you're a bit slow on the uptake you play a Mosquito (also referred to as Mr Moskeeto) who has taken up residency in the fancy abode of the Yamada family. With winter on its way the titular hero - yes you're reading that correctly - must stock up on good old blood so that he can happily hibernate and come out swinging and passing on Malaria the following summer. Someone should really have told Zoom Inc. that a Mosquito male only lives for up to 7 days before popping his clogs but I guess small matters like that don't really count. Bonkers mini games accessed via the start menu make this bizarre piece of crap a surprising little gem in actuality especially the game in which you control a Mr Yamada clone and try to knock your opponent off his bike and off the top of a very tall building to his death. You have to take your hats off to the Japanese, you really do.
