There's a lot of troubling things that can happen to you when you're strapped down in a video game, I'm looking at you Outlast: Whistleblower, but this is a category where nobody does it quite like id Software.

They’ve delivered plenty of brutal things in the Wolfenstein and Doom franchises but Quake might have the nastiest scene in Quake 4’s Stroggification process. If you don't know what that is, I’m sorry but your life is about to get a lot worse. Stroggification is a colloquialism that refers to an unwilling human being forced through Strogg cybernetic augmentation and if you’re still confused, don’t worry, Quake 4 lets you see it in action in all its gory glory.

It might be fifteen years old now but this scene is just as brutal as anything else on this list.

Our hero’s grunts may be kind of hilariously understated as he gets eviscerated, takes a saw blade to the skull and gradually has his limbs chopped off, but no lack of high definition graphics or voicework is stopping this one from being substantially icky.
