10 Cancelled Star Wars Games We’ll NEVER Get Over
6. Star Wars: Dark Squadron
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron was a flight combat series that focused on battles from the perspective of the Rebel Alliance's greatest starfighters. After three successes in a row, Factor 5 decided to mix it up for the fourth outing.
Rather than fighting alongside the Rebels, Star Wars: Dark Squadron had players take control of the Empire's forces, similar to the nineties classic, Star Wars: TIE Fighter.
Unfortunately, the project fell apart after LucasArts chose to pursue another game with Chewbacca as the protagonist. Sadly, George Lucas himself stonewalled this Wookie-centred project, meaning Dark Squadron was put on the chopping block for no reason.
Not much was revealed about Dark Squadron, but prototype footage has made its way online, so there's some sense have the game would've worked.
Though Dark Squadron never came to pass, traces of its premise can be found in Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader. This instalment contains two bonus missions with Darth Vader preventing the Death Star's destruction and leading an assault on Yavin 4.
Although these missions aren't canonical, Dark Squadron could've embraced alternative events like this, where the Empire emerged triumphant during key moments in Star Wars history.
