10 Classic Multiplayer Video Games You Must Play Before You Die

5. Micro Machines 2 (Mega Drive)

The first Micro Machines had already cemented itself as a classic top-down racer back in 1991, and this sequel would improve on that by allowing easily accessible four player racing action for everyone.

Early nineties consoles didn't really cater for more than two players at a time, and in order to go four way you had to fork out to buy a Multi-Tap accessory. Codemasters come up with a wholly unique solution though - they sold cartridges that had two extra controller ports built into them called J-Carts (no, I'm not entirely sure what the 'J' stood for either).

Micro Machines 2: Turbo Tournament took full advantage of this new multiplayer accessibility. It even boasted the ability to play with eight players on four joypads (although sharing a joypad was a bizarre way to play the game). You and your close friends often found yourself in epic race battles, pushing each other off-screen with increasing viciousness to clinch that final winning point.

Many friendships may have been lost thanks to MM2, but not as many as this next multiplayer racer...
