1. Donald Duck: Quackshot (Genesis/Mega Drive)

The Disney "Illusion" series didn't end with World of Illusion. In 1991, Sega gave Donald Duck his own game. In "Quack Shot," Donald paid homage to the Indiana Jones series and set out on a treasure hunt with the help of his nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie. It is another oft forgotten but highly enjoyable platform game, that was once ranked Number 7 in MEGA magazine's top Mega Drive/Genesis games ever. Again, "Quack Shot" was a basic side scrolling platformer, but it had its little quirks that made it different. Firstly, having use of a small plane, Donald was able to tackle the levels in any order that he wanted. Unfortunately this was a bit of a tease as although it made the game look non linear, you actually had to acquire certain power ups in the right order to be able to advance in each city on the map. Donald's main weapon of a plunger gun could be upgraded to sticky plungers and eventually to variations of a popcorn and bubblegum gun. The varying weapon upgrades added a new dimension to the game and kept it fun anytime it seemed like the mechanics were getting stale. Added to this are sections with mine carts and pulleys, which break up the traditional platforming levels. The controls were mostly decent, although the jumping did at times feel overpowered making some parts, which required pinpoint jumping a little frustrating. Once you get used to it however, it is a game that doesn't prove too difficult though is undoubtedly fun. While probably not as good as it's series mate Castle of Illusion, it is no less worthy a revisit by modern gamers. At one point it was available in a double pack with Castle of Illusion so it would be nice to see the game reappear alongside it on the Xbox Live and Playstation marketplaces.
