9. Alan Wake

A strange game with plenty of flaws, Alan Wake is nonetheless worth revisiting thanks to its Twin Peaks-style mountain town setting, a deliciously dark atmosphere and off-kilter characters. You are Alan Wake, a successful-yet-tortured author who goes to the mountain town of Bright Falls to get over his writer's block. Things aren't helped by the disappearance of his wife, who he must then go in search of while being attacked by strange creatures from his own novel. Your only means of warding off them off is with the unusual combination of burning flashlight beams to wound, and well-placed bullets to put them down for good. The combat can be a bit on the awkward side thanks to constantly switching between your items, but this is easily forgiven in a dark action-adventure that's brimming with more character than the majority of current games in the Xbox One catalogue. For added mood, make sure to switch on any radio you find so you can listen to the game's brilliant take on the Twilight Zone.
