10 Confessions Of A PS4 Owner After Buying A Nintendo Switch

5. Motion Controls Threaten To Derail Everything

While a lot of functionality packed into the Switch has paid off in dividends (see the convenience of local multiplayer for proof), not every feature has been successful.

The return of motion controls in particular hasn't inspired confidence, and Nintendo's promotion of gimmicky games that rely on these features (like 1-2 Switch) hopefully won't set a precedent going forward. Not only were motion controls a fad that should have been forgotten about back in 2010, but the Switch's aren't as functional as the Wii's, and waving around the joy-cons to play mini-games doesn't work nearly as well as it did on older consoles.

Unfortunately, Nintendo love a good gimmick, and unlike Sony, who usually just leave botched ideas to die, could go all-in on trying to make motion control-based games a thing again. I'm panicking just thinking about it.

Creating a more focused machine that does a few things well - rather than an all-encompassing console that dips its toes in every market - might be a way to ensure longevity, but here's hoping Nintendo don't overstretch themselves in the future.
