10 Controversial Video Games Your Parents Never Wanted You To Play
4. Doom
The Doom games have got to be one of the most misunderstood video games of all time. Despite placing the player in the role of a hero fighting back against the forces of Hell, the series has been accused by parents of glorifying violence and even promoting Satanism.
One of the first games to be truly hated by parents, Doom started the tradition of games being used as scapegoats for real life tragedies, as evident when it was accused of being partly responsible for the Columbine shootings. Anyone who has actually played any of the Doom games knows that, while there is no denying their violent and bloody nature, they have always been far too removed from any form of social context for these connections to be deemed legitimate.
Still, you cant fault a parent for wanting to keep their kids away from Doom. They are genuinely atmospheric and feature inspiring, and thus frightening, creature designs. A child is more likely to be scared or thrilled than filled with thoughts of violence. Now that Doom has been around long enough for outraged parents to move onto more blatantly offensive games, the franchise will always be remembered as one of the major signifiers that not all video games are intended for younger audiences.
