Tenchu: Stealth Assassins, the action-adventure stealth game set in feudal Japan, was released way back in 1998 on the original Playstation console. The series quickly gained popularity and went on to spawn a number of sequels, however it faded into obscurity following a number of poor releases on the Xbox 360, Wii and Playstation Portable.

The original Tenchu title featured robust stealth mechanics and complex missions that gave players a significant challenge as they made their way throughout the campaign. Players could also choose between playing as either Rikimaru or Ayame with the former being physically stronger while the latter was faster and featured more combos.

The storyline even differed significantly depending on what character was chosen, adding incentive to players to replay through the game multiple times. The game could also be brutally challenging at times, especially if players were looking to receive the best grade at the end of each mission.

The rights to the Tenchu series are now owned by FromSoftware, who recently released Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, which interestingly started life as a new entry in the Tenchu series. Here’s hoping that the developer still has plans for the Tenchu series in the future.
