Taking up the role of James Sunderland, players visit Silent Hill to find his wife, Mary. And along the way encounter terrifying creatures that manifest within the towns creepy fog. After meeting Maria who looks very similar to his wife, the crippling truth is finally revealed.

In by far the darkest twist, James watches a videotape of himself killing the very wife he was in Silent Hill to rescue. Mary was terminally ill and he had put her to rest before the events of the game had even begun, which turns this entire game into one massive guilt trip.

The ending is utterly crushing and to this day, Silent Hill 2 might just be survival horror at its absolute peak.
