8. DOOM (2016)

Back to the whizz-bang shooty stuff, and this year's DOOM perfected its own brand of ultra-violent slaughter so much, I awarded it 'Game of the Year (So Far)' in June 2016. It's not so much that you have to 'experience' any moment in DOOM's Mars-to-Hell-and-back narrative, but rather, the feel of it.

In a rare change of pace for the genre, it feels as though iD Software prioritised DOOM's single-player over the multiplayer, making level design consistently engaging, as well as changing the pace with a ton of power up-filled arena segments and enjoyable boss fights just for kicks.

DOOM isn't just the branding or the personality behind its most exquisite thrills, it's the buckets of blood and entrails that explode from every obliterated foe, the kick of the Super Shotgun, the melee kills that end up with your character just ripping foes asunder with their bare hands.

It's the digital embodiment of revving a chainsaw, shredding a guitar solo or destroying a building with a wrecking ball, all working as one gloriously gory package.
