10 Essential First-Person Shooter Campaigns You Must Play
7. Halo: Combat Evolved (Anniversary Edition)
I went back and forward on precisely which of Halo's landmark campaigns to include, but as the Anniversary edition reworked the original from the ground up, it's by far the definitive edition to play.
Better still, with just the push of a button you can revert the game back to its 2001 original look - with all the "Holy sh*t... we thought that looked good?!" feelings that come alongside. Still, Bungie hit the ground sprinting with a core signature feel that's mostly stayed intact since (only being added to by inheritor-company, 343 Industries).
The reason I'd recommend this original over its sequels as an essential, mostly comes down to the legacy Halo has left behind. It all started with this supremely influential instalment; recharging shields, two-button inventories, quickfire grenades and one-button melee attacks - you can feel the impact of Halo in every FPS to this day, just make sure you know where those features came from.
