Throwing in never-before-seen family members midway through a successful franchise is always a frustrating thing for loyal fans to swallow. Players invest hundreds of hours immersing themselves with their game's main characters, so suddenly having a developer come along and introduce something so major out of the blue often feels a bit cheap.

That is certainly the case with Uncharted and Samuel Drake. Making his first appearance in Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, Sam is main protagonist Nathan's brother, introduced as a man presumed dead after a failed jail break, but who has returned in an attempt to lure his brother back out of retirement.

The thing about Sam's introduction is that it blatantly feels like Naughty Dog were desperate for something to build a story around, rather than it being a natural fit for the series. What makes things even worse is the fact that Sam is one of the franchise's most dislikable characters, constantly lying to Nathan throughout the game.

A Thief's End is undoubtedly a great game, filled with beautiful visuals and a stunning collection of environments, however Sam's out-of-the-blue introduction was perhaps the moment most fans gave up on expecting a consistent storyline arc in the series.
