6. Raiden Over Solid Snake? - Metal Gear Solid 2

1998's Metal Gear Solid produced one of the most badass protagonists in the gaming world with Solid Snake, a super-soldier who infiltrates a nuclear power plant to neutralise the threat carried by a terrorist group known as FOXHOUND.

Growing to become one of the most recognisable figures from the early generations of consoles, Snake is shown throughout the game to be a veteran fighter, emotionally repressed but also remarkably intelligent and surprisingly moralistic, with his character design and depth being one of the biggest reasons behind the game's success.

The sequel, however, 2001's Metal Gear Solid: Sons of Liberty, made the controversial decision to transition the protagonist from Solid Snake to Raiden. The difference between the mystery and depth of Solid Snake and Raiden's strange mix of whining and arrogance really held the game's storyline back from packing the punch of its predecessor had.

Raiden would be given a fairly decent redemption in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, but neither of those titles are enough to save this from being one of the most controversial decisions in the series' history.
