10 Famous Last Words That Made Awesome Video Game Moments

1. "A Man Chooses! A Slave Obeys! OBEY!!" - Andrew Ryan (BioShock)

Even to this day, Bioshock's groundbreaking, intelligent plot is unlike anything else in gaming. The unique setting of Rapture provides a perfect backdrop to the game's events, featuring a bunch of twists and a series of great but loathsome characters. The conflict between Frank Fontaine and Andrew Ryan for control of Rapture is one that is touched on a number of times throughout the game but the game presents it as a historical tale - there's no indication that the player would get wrapped up in it. But of course, Jack does get wrapped up in it. Atlas, the seemingly friendly voice on the radio, has it out for Ryan (well, he did kill his family and blow up his escape route) so much of the game sees the player working towards Ryan's office to extract revenge. The game builds up to this scene beautifully and when it finally arrives... Well, it doesn't disappoint. Upon arrival, Ryan begins a monologue about the difference between a man and a slave. He then starts to refer to and mock Jack's memories, indicating that they're not what they seem. In a final face to face confrontation, Ryan commands Jack like a dog (using the phrase "Would you kindly"), showing the puppet-like nature of the game's hero. In one final showing of Jack's lack of will, Ryan orders him to kill him, continuing to state: "A man chooses, a slave obeys". The final, strained "OBEY!" will still send shivers down your spine to this day and the revelatory nature of Ryan's final monologue is what makes this scene such a classic. His final words are measured and powerful - it's very rare to see a character have this much of an impact on a game in their last scene. I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
