10 Forgotten Pieces Of Gaming Tech
1. Sony/Nintendo PlayStation/ SNES-CD
Probably the most well-known entry on this list for people who know some of the history of either Sony or Nintendo, but still a weird and forgotten bit of tech, nevertheless. Sony’s first attempt at gaming hardware was actually a collaboration with Nintendo resulting in the Super NES CD-ROM, which was basically just a SNES with a CD drive glued to it.
It was planned to be an add-on for the original SNES and a hybrid console for Sony called the PlayStation, catchy name right, which is a weird fact when you think about it. It would be like if Marvel’s first comic was just Batman with a moustache.
However, this relationship didn't last, an argument broke out between Sony and Nintendo about who would receive the profits from the games on the CDs, so instead Nintendo broke off the arrangement and made a deal with then Sony rival Phillips do develop a CD adapter for the SNES. Sony on the other hand, took the PlayStation name and branding and developed their own console which managed to sell twice as many units as the SNES, which in the business world is referred to as a “Screw you” move.
