Next, I present to you the Famicom 3D System, Nintendo’s first and second worst foray into 3D gaming. The 3D System was an accessory for the Famicom designed to give players a three dimensional experience for seven games.

What’s weird is that the technology used is not dissimilar to the method used for old 3D movies with the red and blue paper glasses, which coincidentally was the method used in America for the 3D games instead of the headset. It’s fascinating to read how it worked. Essentially, the game would flicker between two images and the headset would block out the eye that corresponds to the image. This would happen at such rate that there wouldn’t be any flicker and a 3D image would be made.

However, as you can expect, the system did not sell well as it would cause motion sickness both in the people wearing the goggles but also to people looking at the screen with the naked eye. But at least it wasn’t their worst attempt at 3D.
