10 Gaming Mechanics That Developers Should Have Fixed Years Ago

6. Broken Online Matchmaking

Online gaming has become mainstream in recent years, with many major titles like Call of Duty developed around online game modes and others like Battlefront and Overwatch doing away with offline single player completely.

With the difficulty of online matches limited only by the skill of the player, making sure all the varying difficulty levels are factored in is vital to making the online experience as fair as possible. Developers claim this is done by their matchmaking systems, claim being the operative word, as it’s clear that these systems just don’t work.

Too often new players end up in a match with higher level veterans who completely dominate them over and over, leading to the new player giving up. Surely it’s not that hard to match players together based on their level? (e.g. players under a certain level can only play against each other until they level up and are then put in the next matchmaking group – like getting promoted in football). Developers say this is how it works but it's been obvious for years it's not working.
