5. Agro "Dies" - Shadow of the Colossus
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SclbRYmGG9A Shadow of the Colossus is one of the best games ever made, and one of the strongest arguments that video games are art, as our protagonist, Wander, traverses a vast land in search of sixteen Colossi that, if defeated, will allow him to revive a girl named Mono. It's a thrilling adventure that sees you take on enemies that are sand, water, land and air-based, while your trusty steed Agro is with you pretty much all the way. Pretty much. Late in the day, when running across a stone bridge to face the sixteenth Colossus, the bridge begins to break away, causing Agro to lose her footing, but she bucks forward, throwing Wander to safety while the bridge breaks away and Agro falls to her (presumed) death hundreds of feet below in the water. It's one of those heartbreaking moments that completely destroys our hope ahead of the last battle, given the bond that we've formed with her over the course of the game. It also gives us the determination to fight on, and we're all quite relieved when she hobbles along at the end of the game, somehow having survived.
