6. Dom's Wife - Gears of War 2

Though series protagonist Marcus Fenix is a pretty one-note character, we need only look as far as his buddy, Dominic Santiago, to observe a character created with a whole lot more depth. Dom has been looking for his wife for the entirety of the games to this point, and during the second game, he finally discovers her inside a Locust prisoner cage, but her time there has caused her to deteriorate to the point that she is just a hollow shell of what Dom knew and loved. He reluctantly decides to kill her to spare her anymore suffering. It's a moment that tends to catch players off-guard, because they're playing this fairly emotionless shooter, and then bam, you're hit with an emotional sledgehammer that actually shows the writers have more to offer than the mere grunt soldier clichés.
