1. Silent Hill 2
Silent Hill 2 follows James Sunderland, who travels to the eponymous town after uncovering a letter from his dead wife, Mary. When he reaches the misty setting, he encounters Maria, a woman who bears a striking resemblance to his late wife, albeit with a more aggressive personality.
As the title progresses, you learn a lot about James and even discover that he euthanised his wife due to her illness. It then becomes clear that this strange town's monsters and torture are all a manifestation of the protagonist's psyche, designed to punish him for his wrongdoings.
The game has six endings, with the first three being achievable on an initial playthrough and the others on replay. They consist of multiple scenarios, but the most profound has to be that of the "Maria" ending. This climax sees James leave the town, taking Maria with him, and as they depart, she briefly coughs, revealing that she will likely fall ill just like Mary, and the cycle will repeat.
In addition to the profound endings come two joke climaxes, one which involves alien abduction, whilst the other shows that a dog was responsible for all the events of the game. You've got to love that Team Silent sense of humour.
