10 Greatest Horror Video Game Endings
2. Soma
The story of SOMA follows Simon Jarrett, the survivor of a car crash who undergoes an experimental brain scan. After this, we awaken suddenly in the underwater geothermal centre PATHOS-II. What follows is a horrifying experience as you journey through the base encountering robots who believe themselves to be humans, and even find that you are not human either.
It turns out that the Earth was struck by an asteroid, wiping the majority of humanity off of the planet, and in an effort to keep the human race alive, an artificial intelligence named the Warden Unit (WAU) uploaded Simon's brain scan into a robotic body. Humanity is gone, but their minds live on in these bio-mechanical mutants.
Simon is tasked to recover The Ark, a black box with a simulated world for all the brain scans to reside in. The game ends as you sending the Ark off, but remaining in the underwater site. It turns out that the brain scan that was uploaded to was only a copy, and that you will stay here, trapped alone in the dark abyss, while a copy of your conscious lives on.
It's an unbelievably haunting concept about the nature of humanity and sentience. The depressing ending is utterly bleak, even if the post-credits reveal how the copy of Simon is living happily.
