7. Fable

This entry just goes to show that a game can be held in high regard by gamers and critics alike, and yet still fail to live up to its own high standards.

Peter Molyneux has developed something of a reputation in the game industry for talking up his studio's games well before release, only for them to come out and not include many of the things he had promised. This all started with 2004's Fable.

Among the things he teased gamers with prior to its release were the ability to have children, and the mechanic of trees growing in real time as the game progresses. Neither one of these made it into the final version, which he later apologised for.

In short, despite being a huge success and spawning two sequels, Fable was promoted as something it was not, and gamers can only speculate as to how much more impactful the game would have been if Molyneux's overhyping had been entirely justified.
