10 Gutsy Video Games That Tackle Polarising Subject Matter

6. Catherine

Catherine Full Body Vincent
Atlus

Part visual novel, part Q-Bert, and part infidelity fever dream, Catherine is one of the strangest games to have came out in the last decade.

Catherine deals with the protagonist Vincent struggling with the responsibilities of adulthood and his commitment to his long term girlfriend Katherine. Along the way his troubles become visualised through a sexy new love interest called Catherine and the nightmares that she induces, each of which represent his sexuality, commitments, and personal choices.

In addition the game never tries to shame the player for their decisions; whether the player decides to be with Catherine, Katherine, or even chooses to be without either of them the game accepts the players choice and allows them complete freedom over it.

Even the arbitrary morality meter doesn't depict the standard Good vs. Evil dilemma most do and instead - unbeknownst to the player until the finale - it represents Freedom and Order, asking the player if they prefer a life of excitement or one of comfort and stability.

Even then the player can break the meter and enter into yet another relationship with the mysterious Qatherine. We'll let you discover what exciting secrets that one hides for yourself.
