10 Hard-Earned Rewards Video Games Took From You Anyway
7. The Gold Is A Metaphor, But I Still Want It - Fallout: New Vegas
Fallout: New Vegas’ DLC, Dead Money, puts the player in Sierra Madre, a ruined luxury resort that hides a mysterious treasure behind some of the wasteland's greatest dangers.
The main driving point of Dead Money’s story is the gold bars inside of Sierra Madre's vault. You spend the entire DLC looking for a way inside the safe, making plenty of sacrifices and putting in a lot of hard work to get the treasure.
The effort seems to be worth it, as the gold bars are actually worth over 10,000 caps each! However, since the DLC’s main narrative theme is sacrifice, the developers thought it would be a good idea to make you give up the bars as soon as you get your hands on them.
At the end of the DLC, you have to trap its main villain, Father Elijah, inside the vault, and the game forces you to leave the bars behind. You can try to nab a few of them on your way out, but due to their heavy weight, you won't be able to take them all.
To make things even worse, due to their exaggerated value, even after all your hard work, most traders won't buy the bars from you, as they simply don't have enough caps on hand.
What was the point then, New Vegas?
