Dragon Age: Origins tells one of the darkest stories within the series, focusing on the Grey Wardens' endless sacrifices made against the darkspawn horde.

Your character keeps having to give up more and more things as they attempt to stop the Blight, and this can even include the most precious thing in your entire campaign—your lover!

In the ending of the game, it turns out that the only way to stop the darkspawn's master, the Archdemon, is for a Grey Warden to absorb its soul when dealing the killing blow, destroying their own body and soul in the process.

If you invested your time and money into romancing Alistair, the choice falls between the two of you. Now, you might think you can at least sacrifice yourself for your beloved, but the game can actually take him from you anyway.

You see, if you bring Alistair with you to fight the Archdemon, even if you make sure your character deals the final blow and consciously make the choice, Alistair will still override your efforts by unexpectedly charging at the demon to save you instead.

The only way to save Alistair is to not let him come with you or agree to Morrigan's deal and let her sleep with Alistair, which, let's be real, isn't something most players would be okay with.
